Shame on our DA for his reckless disregard for the law and common sense by endangering the public by permitting an obvious drunk friend to drive his vehicle If we EVER vote for this guy again SHAME ON US. Shawn Clark gets my vote on May 4th.
what are people thinking, who in their right mind would elect such scumbags as we have in catawba county. this is the most foul and crooked elected and elected to be officials on the planet.wake up people, do we really need this type of scum in office? especially law enforcement. we need to start all over with some good people. WAKE UP PEOPLE
Gaither could not tell that the guy was drunk because he was just as drunk or drunker himself. No matter how you look at this our DA gave his keys to a drunk man to drive, what if this guy caused a wreck and killed someone or a whole family?
Does Mr.Gaither think that he is above the Law? He should step down as DA. I have heard him say that he is the leader of the county GOP, if that is true I think that the Party should ask him to step down from that position also.
If the party doesn’t condemn Jay Gaither and this activity, the Democrats should. I just hope the Republicans do it first as not to look bad.
I’ve known Jay for years. More importantly, I’ve known his father-in-law Dean Proctor for many more years. Because of my friendship with Dean I got to know Jay and supported him in both of his previous elections for district attorney (and his very first campaign for district court judge). I’ve put a great deal of thought into this matter and have come to the following conclusion.
I remember the first time he ran for district attorney that he was worried about a DWI he received a few years prior becoming an issue that would hurt him in that election. He and I spoke about the DWI and I asked him what his response was to the DWI. He said that the DWI was a stupid mistake that had happened when he was younger, that he had learned his lesson and no longer drank. I believed him and still think that at that time he had stopped drinking.
This incident is evidence that he is now drinking again and that he apparently has a problem. I don’t see how a person could not suspect that Mr. Borden was severly intoxicated unless that person was severly intoxicated himself. I suspect, from the information I’ve read, that Jay was drinking that night as well, was more intoxicated than Mr. Borden and was in the car as a passenger. I don’t see why a person would be so drunk on a weeknight and put his life and the lives of others in such danger unless he has a drinking problem. Of course, Mr. Borden was admitted to a facility for treatment of alcoholism, so I guess that answers my question. Mr. Borden was determined by a court of law to have a drinking problem, so Jay, as a drunk passenger of the car, would be in the same boat.
Jay, as district attorney, should know that one drink is too many for a person to drive. If Jay is going to go out drinking with friends then he should designate a driver or plan ahead of time to have a cab drive him home.
I cannot overlook such reckless disregard for the law, especially by the very person we have elected to uphold our laws. If he can’t be expected to be a law abiding citizen, above reproach, then no one can. I haven’t decided whether it is appropriate for Jay to resign, however I do think he should somehow offer a plea of guilty to aiding and abetting a drunk driver and request to be punished accordingly. When someone in his position violates the law we should expect that their punishment be to the fullest extent of the law. Without doing so we are sending a message to other, including our children, that it is okay to act irresponsibly.
If Gayther will not step down as DA, WE ALL SHOULD JUST FIRE HIM on May 4, 2010. This guy thinks that he is above the law!
Old Party Person > I like your reasoning. I too think Jay Gaither was a passenger in the car. This was a Tues evening. Doesn’t Jay Gaither have a wife and kids? Why was he out drinking on a week night in another town? He did say his wife was with him, which seems even more strange. Where were their kids? Were they with them? Were their kids in the car when John Borden was driving? Either way it was irresponsible. It doesn’t sit well with me.
When you are a drunk it does not matter which day of the week that it is. To a drunk, Tuesday is just as good as a Saturday to get drunk.Gaither MUST GO!!!!!
I can forgive someone–anyone for an error in judgement. No one is perfect!! I will never forget when a friend of mine got a DWI. She felt awful and it was real regret, not just sorry that she got caught. It was her first offense and her first time to get behind the wheel after having too much to drive. How did my friend handle her error in judgement??? By admitting to law enforcement that she was wrong! She gave a personal recompense to society by paying her fines, losing her license for a year, attending AA classes, etc. The morning after her arrest, she called all her close friends and family and apologized for letting them down by acting in a way that she knew was wrong. She humbly admitted her error in judgement and accepted her punishment and the support of her friends.
What has the DA done to compensate for his error in judgement? He waited until the story became public to even talk about it publicly. He waited a WEEK after the first story came out to tell a little bit more of the story. And even then, when he did, he dragged his WIFE into it by saying neither of them “appreciated” how drunk the friend was! Has he no shame at all??? He didn’t even man up and accept full responsibility! He shifted some of the blame on his wife! That is disgusting.
If Jay had come forward with this back in Februrary and insisted on being treated equally under the law as his friend, then I could forgive him his error in judgement. This–hiding it, lying, shifting blame–this is not about forgiving or not forgiving. That is up to his family and to God. What this is about is teaching every single one of our citizens that have had to go through the court system and all of our children that NO ONE is above the law. This is about teaching our kids that when you screw up you fess up. You pay the price for the wrong and you move on in life to make better choices. Failures don’t sink any of us unless we let them. Jay is sinking his own ship here–not people that are disgusted with his behavior.
Please tell anyone and everyone about this web site so that people will know what Gaither really is. We must get him out of office.
